Involving young people in regeneration initiatives is central to the Government's commitment to addressing social exclusion and youth crime. Based on a series of reports and evaluations of youth work practice across Manchester, this article illustrates the ways in which youth work practice can meet the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR - now DLTR) best practice guidelines. The article highlights that when youth work practitioners are enabled to work with young people who have become devalued it is possible to facilitate their involvement in their local neighbourhood.
