Abstract

This volume investigates the history and activity of the Latin religious orders that installed themselves in the former territories of the Byzantine Empire, in the wake of the Fourth Crusade in 1204 and up to the Ottoman conquest of the fifteenth century. In particular, it examines how the Western European monks and friars sought to pursue their missionary and spiritual activities in a frontier territory of Latin Christendom while at the same time engaging with the politics of the newly installed Latin regimes and with the indigenous Greek populations.
