Abstract

Synecdoche: praha is a traditional electroacoustic performance piece with live diffusion, exploring the concept of spatialisation through the use of a diffusion setup of 6 speakers, arranged in a configuration that resembled an 'in-the-round' theatrical layout. The use of this stage set-up, with an audience sharing the 'performance' space, sought to explore and challenge the conventional 'theatrical' proscenium arch listening position, with the aim to create an awareness, in the listeners of the act of 'listening', rather than having a performer "face on" as the focus. The intention was to bring electroacoustic techniques to an audience relatively unaccustomed to the nature of this work in a live context.
