This was a pilot project to promote the reintegration of 7 pupils from Willow Grove School, a special school for pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties in Wigan, into mainstream secondary schools. There were also 5 “control” pupils, who moved into the secondary section of the special school. Structured interviews were held with school staff from both the receiving mainstream schools and Willow Grove School and with the pupils’ parents. 4 progress reports were also collected during the academic year. It was found that of the 7 pupils in the reintegration group, 5 were making good progress in mainstream school but for 2 pupils the placement broke down and they returned to the secondary sector of Willow Grove School and one was subsequently placed in a residential school for pupils experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties. Of the 5 control pupils: 3 remained in the secondary sector of Willow Grove, 1 transferred to a school for pupils with moderate learning difficulties and 1 was permanently excluded.
