'InTarsi' (2016) is the title of the new work of eia the award winning Catalonian contemporary circus company. This multi-disciplinary work combines refined circus skills in hand to hand acrobatics, banquette, mini-trampoline, teeter board and skipping rope, with dance and physical theatre, and was created over a period of extended research from February 2015- April 2016. In my role of choreographer I was responsible creating the movement language and choreographic constructs that constitute the full-length work. This was developed during artistic residencies at the Central de Circ, Barcelona; L’Estruch, Sabadell; Teatre de Salt, Girona, where I led practice research sessions, generating choreographed circus material from theoretical inquiry. The research questions underpinning the high-risk physical and emotional commitment to circus work, explored notions of hospitality in acts of contact with other and in the development of interdisciplinary work. The embodied inquiries drew on Jacques Derrida’s 'Of Hospitality' (2000) as a means of re-thinking the political and ethical in that which is foreign to the body, and on Rosa Bradotti’s 'Nomadic Theory' (2011) that recognizes the dynamic transformations available in human relations that are both creative and restrictive. 'InTarsi' was premiered at the prestigious Mercat de les Flors, Barcelona in April 2016, and will be touring internationally until 2020.
