Abstract

This chapter explores the ways in which children express citizenship in their everyday lives, thereby creating a sense of identity. In particular it explores this from the perspective of children from Asian and other minority ethnic communities in the UK. By a focus on the everyday and cultural we can critique individualistic conceptions of citizenship, subvert the adult/child (Citizen/non-citizen) binary, contest the myth of the passive child and present a more nuanced conception of ethnic minority children’s identities.
