Abstract

'Beyond the North Tower' is a sound installation for the FED Dementia Home in Salford, Greater Manchester. The Garden has been landscaped to look like a seaside location; the sound installation presents a multi-channel seaside soundscape that changes over the time of day and during the week. The sounds of the installation were recorded by Davismoon at specific seaside locations after many discussions with the residents of the FED. It reflects their desire to include many popular seaside locations in and around the North West of England; the North East of England and North Wales. As a work of sound ecology it includes recordings of the sea, families by the sea, wildlife by the sea, modes of travel to and from the sea (i.e. period steam trains and trams), sounds of fun by the sea (i.e. punch and judy, organ at Blackpool's North Tower, amusements etc.). This is all with the view to personalise this communal space for the residents and to observe how it may contribute to a richness of their living space.
