There has been a lack of research examining how medical students’ and clinicians’ respond to patient emotion in clinical consultations and the OSCE. The main aim of the workshop is to introduce video coding schemes used to quantify healthcare professionals’ emotional responsiveness in simulated and “real” clinical encounters. Some of the associated difficulties in data coding, data analysis, and researching patient-provider communication will be explored; as will the potential practical implications of incorporating micro coding (of videos) as a training tool in medical education. The workshop will be interactive and tailored to the needs of the group. The workshop is suitable for both junior and senior clinical communication researchers, and teachers.
