I worked as a journalist and art critic in my home country, Romania, while studying for a BA in English and Italian and an MA in European Studies. Reporting regional politics in the multiethnic region of Transylvania stimulated a keen interest in nationalism and ethnic conflict and I went on to do an MPhil in Nationalism Studies at Central European University in Budapest.
